Managing chip inventory is critical
Unlike a professional full-size craps table — or even a single-dealer home table — tabletop games simply don’t have the physical infrastructure to bank and manage thousands of chips. Because of this, the host needs a simple and organized chip system that keeps the game flowing and prevents the bank from running dry.

In this section we’ll cover:
• Chip inventory needs
• Practical advice for hosting games
• Recommended full-game chip setups
• Beginner-friendly PLAYER BANKING
• Save
$$$$ on purchasing chips

Below is a single dealer table complete with built-in chip rails makes everything look smooth and professional...but they don’t come cheap.

Now toss in a 2,000+ chip bank for a single-dealer setup like this, and suddenly your Craps Mat “little home game” starts feeling like a serious investment. That’s why smart planning—and chip control—is everything.

Considerations for Hosting a Home Craps Game with Limited Space and Chips

With limited table-top space for a bank and a 100-chip tray for players presents a unique set of challenges on large games. Hosting a craps party at home sounds easy—until your tiny table and player chip trays are overrun by a tequila-fueled stampede.

What’s that? You’re keeping it small? Good luck with that. I said the same thing… right up until the texts rolled in, friends dragged plus-ones, and suddenly I was running an alcohol-induced circus. Plan for madness. Embrace the chaos. It can get crazy fun unlike any other home party game.

After extensive testing and play, I have developed a set of guidelines to ensure smooth, enjoyable, and realistic gameplay without running into logistical issues.

1. Eliminate $1 Chips
$1 chips are simply impractical for our home setup. Small games and large. They consume too much bank space on a kitchen table set-up and we have concerns with each player only having a 100 chip count tray. Players will adjust quickly to the absence of $1 chips.

2. Play True Odds Craps
The host should strongly consider a True Odds craps game rather than a casino-adjusted odds format.

True Odds uses fewer physical chips by eliminating fractional payouts and complicated bet structures*, keeping the table cleaner and the game moving.

This simplicity means:
• Each player deals one hand per round
• You’re not stuck dealing all night
• You get to play along with everyone else
• Place bets are easy to pay
• Prop bets are easy to pay

And yes—this is totally manageable, even with a cocktail or three - or whatever!  :)
*See the Hosting a Craps Party section for more details.

3. High Min Bets / Low Limits
After testing various formats, I’ve found the ideal Craps Mat Home Party Game structure is:

Starting Bankroll: $2,000 (Banked Game)
• 15 × $100 (Black) = $1500
• 20 × $25 (Green)  = $500

Table Limits:
• Min: $25 or $50
• Max: $500
• Props: $5 minimum

Additional Considerations:

Game Volatility:

In our true odds craps home game, every bet pays fair mathematical odds — so it’s a zero-expectation game overall. Long-term, everyone breaks even on average unlike a casino pay structure, their game is a negative long-term expectation. But the dice are streaky! Hot shooters can go on big rolls, leading to exciting swings and some serious chip payouts flying across the table.

Rare but Necessary High-End Inventory:
Although it will be rare, there will be occasions when multiple players win big simultaneously. Without sufficient high-value chips, you risk stalling the game or awkwardly issuing IOUs, which is undesirable.

Guest Behavior
In a play-for-fun home game, players bet way more aggressively than they would in a real casino. This behavior increases chip usage and necessitates a larger chip inventory.

To prevent wild, out-of-control play, I’ve added some successful guardrails in the games I host:
Picture
Consider Denominational Chips.
China clay denomination chips really give the Craps Mat that WOW FACTOR players love. The clear values make the game easier to follow, help new players learn faster, and give the table an authentic casino feel that everyone enjoys.
Picture
Bottom Line:
Even though most games will not require it, you should maintain a large inventory of high-denomination chips to ensure smooth play during those rare but critical big-win events. Proper preparation guarantees that your home craps games remain exciting, professional, and memorable for your guests.

1000 CHIPS - 7-8-9 PLAYERS
BANK GAME

Why the $500 Limit (Early Rounds)

The $500 limit applies during the early rounds of play for a reason.
This is a tabletop, portable game, where:
• Bank space is limited
• Chip inventory needs to stay manageable
• 1000 chips can be transported easily.
Most chips sold for home play are HEAVY (13.5 grams) That's 30 pounds! Trust me; you do not want to transport more than 1000 chips!

Flexible Limits Based on Player Count
The $500 limit is designed for full games of 7–9 players to keep chips moving and the game balanced.

With fewer players, the host can comfortably raise the table limit, allowing for bigger bets and more action without disrupting the flow of the game.

Use caution with limits.
With a 750-chip inventory (4–6 players bank game), the game should remain at a $500 maximum during early rounds.
In my experience hosting many games, I only raise the $500 limit when working with a full 1,000-chip inventory and lese players.

Seasoned craps players may find this format less appealing due to the altered dynamics and absence of a traditional house bank.

But as a
teaching tool and party game, it’s incredibly effective. Beginners love it. They learn the game faster.

And—most importantly—want to play again! And -- DEAL!

Player Bank Craps

All you need is 400 chips!

No House Bank. No Stress. Just Fun for Beginners.

A beginner-friendly home craps game where players take turns being the bank — and actually *want* to deal.

This version of craps is designed for new players and small home games. On their first exposure to the game, only the Pass Line and True Odds Place Bets are used to keep the game simple and easy to learn.

The Field, Hardways, Dont Pass and Prop Bets will be introduced later as explained in the Beginner’s section of Hosting Home Games on this website.

The goal is simple: make the game easy to learn and fun to play.

“We want ’em drinkin’, not thinkin’ ”

The Player Bank Concept
Traditional casino craps uses a house bank.

In the Player Bank system, the dealer acts as the bank during their turn.

Winning bets are paid from the dealer’s chips.  Losing bets are collected by the dealer. All chips stay in circulation among the players, which keeps the game balanced and easy to manage.

Remember, the entire game requires only 400 chips, which easily fit in the same box as the Craps Mat and walls.
Everything fits in the box.
(See video below.)

How Player Bank Gameplay Works
• Each player begins with a $2,000 bankroll

• When it is a player’s turn to deal, that player temporarily becomes the bank

• Winning bets are paid from the dealer’s personal chips, their starting $2000 and any winnings they accumulate.

• Losing bets are collected and kept by the dealer

• If the shooter is winning big....
Dealers pull $2000 markers (loans) of
4 purple $500 chips and sell them to players in order to continue to pay the bets during a hot roll

• Dealer markers are in increments of $2000 - no more - Sometimes, dealers pull 10,000 + in markers to pay the bets, it can get crazy fun!

• This is how the high end purple and gold chips are introduced into the game

• Dealers may take
unlimited markers while dealing so all winning bets can be paid

• Players who lose their original bankroll may take one $2,000 marker in the 2nd and 3rd rounds (not during the 1st round)

• After a 7-out, the next player becomes the dealer and the bank.

• All markers, dealer & players are paid back at the end of the game

Purpose of the System
Many beginners are nervous about dealing their first time.

Allowing the dealer to keep all losing bets changes the experience. Instead of feeling pressure, players are often eager to deal once they realize the dealer can win while running the game.

As any experenced craps player knows; the dealer seems to win more often than not.

The result is a home-game format that is relaxed, social, and fun for everyone at the table.

Player Starting Bankroll
(Player Bank Game)
Each player begins with $2,000 in chips.
Chip Breakdown
• 14 × $100 Black = $1,400
• 20 × $25 Green = $500
• 20 × $5 Red = $100

Total: $2,000

Table Limits
• Minimum Bet: $25 or $50
• Maximum Bet: $500

Many hosts report that a $50 minimum bet works best for their games.

The Player Bank option is a favorite with beginners. It speeds up the learning curve and—more importantly—keeps them coming back… ready to play and even deal. As both a learning system and a party game, it just works.

In Summary
Player Bank Craps is a bankless, chip-conserving variation of the game designed to give beginners a fun, educational introduction to craps.
